Katarina Wit began skating at five. Her talent soon were evident and she was invited to Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. The school where she was enrolled, she was introduced to their coach Jutta Muler. Witt made her breakthrough in 1982, when she was second in the World Championships at Copenhagen. The elegance and grace of Witt drew the attention of everyone and she has been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic triumphs at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. A more competitive contest afterward, she won her gold medal. Free skaters lost however, she took home the gold medal in the mandatory figures and her short programme. Witt became the first female multiple winner in figure skating after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt, who had achieved success in the film industry as an actress before returning to figure skating in 1994 to compete at Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Although she didn't take home a single gold medal, she delighted fans with finishing seventh. Witt was admitted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
